About Seasoning of Firewood

We are no longer offering firewood.  However, you should still know that some types of firewood take up to a full year to dry to a point of gaining full heating effect and to reduce creosote in the chimney. Burning unseasoned firewood causes excessive smoke and resulting creosote. Please try to order your firewood enough in advance that it has a chance to dry properly before burning.

While most dealers of firewood own a tree service company and may offer lower prices on their firewood due to charges to the property owners where the trees were removed. However, there are still costs for cutting to firewood length and splitting the wood, as well as loading and delivery. Needless to say, fuel costs chain saws, splitter, conveyor and delivery vehicles are quite high as well. When shopping, ensure you get only quality hardwoods.

Foolish Risks

Never burn treated or painted wood as doing so is dangerous.  Treated wood contains arsenic, making the smoke poisonous.

Never burn pine or other softwoods as the dangerous amounts of resin can lead to chimney fires.

It Takes Time

Seasoning of wood can take 6 months to a year after it is cut, depending on its density and how it is stored.

Windfall trees, until cut and split, can not season properly.  Wood dries from the ends while still in log form.  Therefore, if it is fallen, but not cut to firewood length, it is not drying.  The wood shown below is drying properly!

Heat values of seasoned wood versus green, or unseasoned wood, may be as much as 25-30% higher.  Also, with seasoned wood, creosote buildup is greatly reduced, meaning less cleaning and safer burning.

Do you need help deciding how much wood you need?

Here is a picture of a dual axle Homesteader dump trailer (trailer is 12' long) loaded with nearly two cords to help you better judge your needs.

Remember, order your wood in the spring or early summer to ensure your wood will be ready for fall delivery and fully seasoned before you need to begin burning.

Randy Morse is proudly standing with Roland Karl of Germany, and the chainsaw sculpture that Randy and his wife, Lou, successfully bid on during an auction.

Mr. Karl was in Ridgway Pennsylvania in February 2007 with over 225 other carvers from around the world for the 8th Annual Ridgway Rendezvous.

All of the carvers donate a sculpture for the auction, which benefits the Ridgway YMCA and the Children's Make-A-Wish foundation.

The Morse's are very proud of their sculpture and excited to have helped such worthy causes.
